The Case of the 500-Mile Email
I first read this story at least 15 years ago, and it’s stuck with me. It’s a perfect example of how real-world debugging can involve the strangest edge cases and unexpected interactions between systems.
The TL;DR: A university’s statistics department reported they couldn’t send emails more than 500 miles. Absurd as that sounds, it was actually true - and for a mind-bending reason involving the speed of light, TCP timeouts, and a subtle downgrade of their mail server.
Next time you’re debugging a system and think “this can’t possibly be happening,” remember this story.
